Installing AlteredSaver v2.3 for Linux!

All AlteredSaver content is contained in this package. Please remove any previous versions of the AlteredSaver executable 'altered' from your system before installing this new version. You may also have an old KDE wrapper 'kaltered.kss' installed, and also 'awconfig' if you installed the v2.3 demo- these should also be removed.

Requirements:
AlteredSaver v2.3 for Linux will work as a screen saver with KDE or Xscreensaver (hence Gnome).
OpenGL/Mesa must be installed (libGL.so), along with a suitable driver for your 3D-capable Video Card.
libc2.1.2 & GTK 1.2 must be installed on your system.

The following OpenSource libraries must be installed for correct operation of AlteredSaver v2.3 for Linux. The versions tested with AlteredSaver are included in binary form in this package (file SDLlibs_i386rpm.tgz), and are available in source code and binary forms from our web site at:

*Simple DirectMedia Layer (SDL) v1.1.4 or later. Available from many sources - download binaries &/or source direct: http://www.libsdl.org
*SDL_mixer 1.0 or later from http://www.devolution.com/~slouken/SDL/projects/SDL_mixer/
*SMPEG 0.4.0 or later (for playback of .mp3 files) from: http://www.lokigames.com/development/

Installing the SDL libraries:
Even if you already have SDL installed, you may need to upgrade to this new(ish) version, 1.1.4.
Binary RPMs are included in this package. Please note that for non-RPM systems like Slackware, you'll need to convert these RPMs to a suitable format (.tgz), or build the libraries from source. For additional SDL installation help, please see www.libsdl.org!

Please extract the AlteredSaver v2.3 package to produce the install directory 'altered-2.3' as follows:
tar zxvf altered-2.3.tgz; cd altered-2.3

Now extract SDLlibs_i386rpm.tgz to produce 3 RPMs.
tar zxvf SDLlibs_i386rpm.tgz

Now install each RPM in the following order:
rpm --install SDL-1.1.4-1.i386.rpm
rpm --install smpeg-0.4.0-1.i386.rpm
rpm --install SDL_mixer-1.0.6-1.i386.rpm

Installing AlteredSaver:
In the 'altered-2.3' directory - AFTER installing the SDL libraries, without the (...):
make (no arguments)

You will be informed where the files will be installed by default. You should edit the Makefile (using any text editor) if you need to change the default locations for executables, scenes and the KDE wrapper 'kaltered.kss'. Once you're happy with the installation location(s), copy the files by running:
make install

To test your installation run 'awconfig' (see 'Settings' help section)

Product License Issues:
The distribution and use of the required OpenSource libraries (marked * above) is covered by the GNU LGPL. Full source code and binaries are available from the links given above. Please note that AlteredSaver uses these libraries by means of a shared library mechanism and all source code, 3D content for AlteredSaver and binary executables 'altered' and 'awconfig' remain Copyright (c) AlteredWorlds 2000 and are covered by the enclosed AlteredSaver Product License Agreement.

The KDE wrapper (binary executable 'kaltered.kss') for AlteredSaver is subject to the same source code licence as KDE 1.1.2, the GPL; wrapper source and this license is included in this package, and is based on source code from KDE Copyright (c) Martin R. Jones 1999. Please use at your own risk. The KDE wrapper may be rebuilt using the included source code & source package 'kdebase' for KDE 1.1.2, available from www.kde.org and also available from our site in the SDLlibs directory.
